The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is a major milestone on the evolution path towards all-IP network and service solutions. The principles, standards and targets of IMS are presented. The key role of IMS in the release plan of 3GPP is emphasized. IMS is discussed in the broader framework of fixed and mobile networks and in the context of the Next Generation Network (NGN).
Issues of Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) are addressed. The IMS architecture designed by 3GPP is explored in detail. The individual IMS components are presented with their functions and interfaces. The protocols and formats are introduced with the focus on the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). Applications of IMS and
current implementation trends are outlined.

Course target:
The participants are familiar with the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) and can assess it in the context of evolving telecommunication infrastructures. They learn the architectural design of IMS and the functions of the IMS components. They can evaluate the significance of IMS implementations for their respective area of responsibility.

Target group
:
Network operators, network planners, service providers, system developers, application programmers

Duration
: 2 days
